Frost Death Knight Guide
Frost Death Knight came into Midnight almost untouched from The War Within — the developers were happy with the spec, so it kept its full kit and quietly rose to the top of the raid meta. It pairs huge, predictable burst windows every ~45s with real durability (Anti-Magic Shell, Icebound Fortitude, Death Strike) and a simple, approachable proc-driven rotation. It is a top-tier single-target raid spec; in Mythic+ it is strong but sits a notch lower because its AoE and utility lean thinner than the best dungeon specs.
As of Patch 12.0.5, the Nebulous Voidcore lets you target gear via Bonus Loot rolls after Season 1 Raid bosses, Mythic+ dungeons, Bountiful Delves, and Nightmare Prey Hunts — a controlled way to chase Frost BiS instead of praying to drops. A Bonus Roll after a M+ dungeon awards the Great Vault item level for that keystone level, so +10 and above can give 1/6 Myth-track pieces. Frost is sim-sensitive, so spend weekly cores on item level, your tier set, and on-use trinkets that line up with the ~45s Pillar of Frost burst window.

🚀 Opener
Standard 2H Breath of Sindragosa / Deathbringer raid opener. Pool to ~60+ Runic Power before you commit Breath, and stack your trinket + potion into the Pillar window. Pre-pull Empower Rune Weapon a moment early so you enter combat with procs and resources.
- Empower Rune Weapon (pre-pull / on pull)
- Obliterate
- Reaper's Mark (Deathbringer)
- Remorseless Winter
- Pillar of Frost + Breath of Sindragosa + Potion + Trinket + Raise Dead (all stacked)
- Frostwyrm's Fury (Apex: Chosen of Frostbrood doubles its damage + grants Haste)
- Obliterate (consume Killing Machine)
- Empower Rune Weapon (second charge)
- Obliterate, then fall into the single-target priority below
⚔️ Single-Target Priority
Frost is a proc-priority spec: spend Killing Machine on Obliterate and Rime on Howling Blast, never cap Runic Power, never cap Runes. During Breath of Sindragosa, every Killing Machine and Rime you consume extends Breath's duration — keep it fed.
- Reaper's Mark on cooldown (Deathbringer) — and detonate it in your burst window
- Obliterate to consume Killing Machine procs (highest priority spender)
- Frost Strike at 5 stacks of Razorice (Shattering Blade) to cash in the stacks
- Howling Blast to consume Rime procs (don't overwrite a second proc)
- Frost Strike to spend Runic Power before it caps (when not running Breath)
- Empower Rune Weapon on cooldown to generate procs + resources
- Soul Reaper on targets that will drop below ~35% inside its window
- Non-procced Obliterate as the last-resort Rune filler
- Pillar of Frost + Frostwyrm's Fury on cooldown as your ~45s burst window
💥 AoE / Cleave Priority
Keep the same proc rules, but swap your spenders to the AoE versions and keep Remorseless Winter rolling. Razorice/Frostbane cleave spreads Frost Strike damage to everything around your target, so maintain Razorice stacks across the pack.
- Remorseless Winter on cooldown — the floor of all multi-target damage
- Reaper's Mark on the priority target (Deathbringer); detonation cleaves
- Howling Blast on Rime procs (free AoE Frost Fever spread)
- Frostscythe to consume Killing Machine at 3+ targets (replaces Obliterate)
- Glacial Advance to spend Runic Power at 2+ targets (replaces Frost Strike)
- Frostbane procs take priority when available (cleave spenders)
- Pillar of Frost + Frostwyrm's Fury into the pack for burst
- Frost Strike / Obliterate single-target filler when only 1–2 mobs remain
⏱️ Cooldowns
Your damage is heavily front-loaded into a ~45s burst window built around Pillar of Frost. Line every offensive cooldown up under Pillar; don't let them drift apart. Hold a few seconds only to catch an imminent AoE spawn or a boss damage-amp window.
💚 Defensive Toolkit
Frost is one of the tankiest DPS specs in the game — a big reason it sits at the top of the meta. Anti-Magic Shell makes it a premier soaker for magic mechanics, and Death Strike gives a real self-heal button most DPS lack.
🧰 Utility & Crowd Control
| Ability | Use |
|---|---|
| Mind Freeze | Primary interrupt (kick). Use a mouseover/focus macro. |
| Death Grip | Ranged single-target pull/taunt-yank — reposition a caster or runner into the pack; situationally huge in M+. |
| Asphyxiate | Single-target stun for lockdown or backup kick. |
| Blinding Sleet | Short frontal-cone AoE disorient — your AoE CC / interrupt-adjacent stop. |
| Death's Advance | Passive move-speed + sprint; baseline mobility and snare resistance. |
| Wraith Walk | Channeled sprint that breaks roots — gap-close or escape. |
| Death Charge / Death Grip pull | Rider of the Apocalypse adds Death Charge for extra mobility; Death Grip doubles as a self-reposition. |
| Raise Ally | Combat resurrection (battle rez) — a slot most pure-DPS bring. |
| Anti-Magic Zone | Raid-wide magic damage reduction — counts as a group external. |
📊 Stat Priority
Item level first, always — a higher-ilvl piece almost always wins. After that the consensus secondary order is:
- Mastery - the top secondary. Increases your Frost damage, which is the bulk of your total damage. Stack it through gems and enchants.
- Critical Strike - synergizes with Killing Machine and abilities like Icy Death Torrent / The Long Winter; strong but slightly devalued by guaranteed crits.
- Haste - more attack speed = more Killing Machine procs, faster Rune regen, lower GCD. Excellent in Breath of Sindragosa builds; some builds value it above Crit, so sim yourself.
- Versatility - flat damage plus a little damage reduction; the dump stat but never useless.
Weapon runeforges: Two-Handed builds runeforge Rune of the Fallen Crusader. Dual-Wield runs Rune of Razorice (main hand) + Rune of the Fallen Crusader (off-hand). DR breakpoints (rating): Mastery/Crit 1380 (10%), 1840 (20%); Haste 1320 (10%), 1760 (20%); Vers 1620 (10%).
🎁 Tier Set, Trinkets & Consumables
Tier set (Midnight Season 1, via Catalyst): The 2pc and 4pc reinforce the Pillar of Frost burst window — favor wearing 4pc once you can, then let item level decide the remaining slots. Check the live panel for the exact current bonuses, since they are tuned across the season.
Trinkets: Frost wants on-use burst trinkets that line up with the 45s Pillar window, plus a strong static-stat / proc trinket as the second slot. Raid and M+ best-in-slot shift with tuning — defer to the live top-50 data below.
Consumables: Flask of the Shattered Sun · Combat potion Light's Potential (some sims favor the aggressive default — stack it into Pillar) · Health potion Silvermoon Health Potion · Food Hearty Silvermoon Parade / Royal Roast · Void-Touched Augment Rune · weapon oil per the enchants page.
Gems & enchants: Mastery is the recommended gem and enchant theme — Indecipherable Eversong Diamond in the socket slot plus Mastery secondary gems; Mastery weapon/gear enchants where available.
🗝️ Mythic+ Tips
- Keep Remorseless Winter rolling on every pull — it is the floor of all your AoE and is easy to forget on the move.
- Maintain Razorice / Frostbane stacks across the pack so Frost Strike cleave actually spreads; tunnel one target and your AoE collapses.
- Deathbringer 'Breathbane' (Breath + Frostbane, 2H) is the strongest all-round M+ build; Rider of the Apocalypse is the cleave/mobility alternative.
- Pre-cast Anti-Magic Shell for known magic hits — Frost is a premier soaker, so volunteer for magic-soak mechanics.
- Use Death Grip to yank casters/runners into the pack and Blinding Sleet to disorient a clump; Death Strike to self-top between packs.
- Line Pillar of Frost + Frostwyrm's Fury with the biggest pull, not the first one — hold burst a few seconds for the real damage.
⌨️ Macros & Addons
WeakAuras is not supported in Midnight (12.0) — use Blizzard's built-in Cooldown Manager (importable configs on Wago.io). Addons: ElvUI, DBM/BigWigs, GTFO, OmniCD for external tracking.

🚫 Common Mistakes
- Capping Runic Power or Runes — overflow is wasted resource and lost damage; spend before you cap.
- Letting Breath of Sindragosa drop early — you must keep consuming Killing Machine and Rime to extend it; stop feeding it and it falls off.
- Spreading cooldowns out — Pillar, Frostwyrm's Fury, trinket and potion all want to be inside the same window, not scattered.
- Overwriting a Rime or second Killing Machine proc — consume the proc you have before generating another.
- Tunneling single-target in AoE — forgetting Remorseless Winter and Razorice spread tanks your cleave.
- Hoarding defensives — Anti-Magic Shell, Icebound Fortitude and Death Strike are on short cooldowns; use them proactively, you'll have them back.
