Arcane Mage Guide
Arcane is a high-ceiling burst caster built around banking Arcane Charges and Arcane Salvo stacks, then dumping everything into Arcane Surge + Touch of the Magi for a huge burn window. It rewards tight mana management and stack-tracking, but Season 1's reworked kit is clunky — the Salvo/Barrage-threshold gating makes the priority fiddly and the spec underperforms tuning-wise this season, landing it low in raid and only middling in M+. Spellslinger is the go-to hero tree, with strong AoE and competitive single-target.
As of Patch 12.0.5, the Nebulous Voidcore lets you target gear via Bonus Loot rolls after Season 1 Raid bosses, Mythic+ dungeons, Bountiful Delves, and Nightmare Prey Hunts — a controlled way to chase Arcane BiS instead of praying to normal drops. A Bonus Roll after a M+ dungeon awards the Great Vault item level for that keystone level, so +10 and above can give 1/6 Myth-track pieces. Your best payoffs are on-use trinkets that line up with Arcane Surge plus your crit-scaling tier set.

🚀 Opener
Build to 20 Arcane Salvo stacks BEFORE you commit Arcane Surge — the burn is wasted if your stacks aren't ready. Pre-pot and use long-duration buffs (potion/racial) just before Surge, short-duration ones just after. AoE openers swap Arcane Blast for Arcane Pulse.
- Pre-cast Arcane Blast (or Arcane Pulse on AoE) into the pull
- Arcane Orb once to seed Splinters / Salvo stacks
- Arcane Blast spam until you reach 20 Arcane Salvo stacks
- Combat potion (Light's Potential) + long-duration racial
- Arcane Surge (drains mana, +35% spell damage window)
- Touch of the Magi (banks 20% of damage dealt, then detonates)
- Pour Arcane Barrage / Missiles / Orb into the Touch window
- Spend remaining Clearcasting on Arcane Missiles before Surge falls off
- From here, follow the single-target or AoE priority below
⚔️ Single-Target Priority
Spellslinger build. The whole loop is: build Arcane Salvo with Arcane Orb (used on Clearcasting) and Arcane Blast, then fire Arcane Barrage exactly when you hit the Polished Focus threshold (20 stacks). Don't free-cast Barrage — it resets your Charges and dumps your stacks.
- Arcane Surge on cooldown (line up with Touch of the Magi)
- Touch of the Magi on cooldown
- Arcane Orb if you have Clearcasting and your last cast was Arcane Barrage
- Arcane Barrage at 4 Arcane Charges + 20 Arcane Salvo stacks (Polished Focus threshold)
- Arcane Missiles to spend Clearcasting (keep Nether Precision rolling before Arcane Blast)
- Arcane Orb on 0–2 Arcane Charges to rebuild
- Arcane Blast as the primary filler / Charge + Salvo builder
- Presence of Mind for guaranteed instants while moving
- Evocation when out of mana (outside the burn window)
- Arcane Barrage if you lack the mana to keep casting Arcane Blast
💥 AoE / Multi-Target Priority
Same skeleton as single-target, but Arcane Orb and Arcane Barrage become much stronger and you Barrage at LOWER Salvo thresholds so the cleave keeps flowing. Swap the Arcane Blast filler for Arcane Pulse (Arcane Explosion) at 3+ targets.
- Arcane Surge + Touch of the Magi on cooldown
- Arcane Orb with Clearcasting when below ~14 Arcane Salvo stacks (4+ targets)
- Arcane Barrage at 4 Charges + 20 stacks
- Arcane Barrage at 4 Charges + <18 Salvo stacks with Clearcasting or Orb ready (3+ targets)
- Arcane Barrage at 4 Charges + <10 Salvo stacks with Clearcasting or Orb ready (heavy cleave)
- Arcane Missiles to spend Clearcasting
- Arcane Orb on low Charges to rebuild
- Arcane Pulse (Arcane Explosion) as the filler at 3+ targets
- Arcane Blast if you want to favor a priority target
- Evocation / Arcane Barrage when out of mana
⏱️ Cooldowns
Your damage is heavily front-loaded into the Surge + Touch burn. Stack them together as the 'Big Burn' and squeeze a 'mini-burn' (Touch alone) into the gaps. Always have 20 Salvo stacks ready before you press Surge.
💚 Defensive Toolkit
Mage is one of the best-defended ranged classes — Ice Block is a full immunity, and you have a barrier, a damage-smoother, and two repositioning tools. Use these proactively against telegraphed damage rather than reactively after a spike.
🧰 Utility & Crowd Control
| Ability | Use |
|---|---|
| Counterspell | Primary interrupt (24s CD); locks the school for a few seconds. Use a mouseover/focus macro. |
| Spellsteal | Steal a beneficial magic buff off an enemy — huge in M+/raid for removing enemy empowerments and gaining the buff yourself. |
| Polymorph | Long single-target CC (sheep); breaks on damage. Pair with /stopcasting for clean re-sheeps. |
| Dragon's Breath | Frontal cone disorient — short AoE CC / interrupt-adjacent control on a pack. |
| Ring of Frost | Placed AoE incapacitate zone — pre-set crowd control for adds entering an area. |
| Frost Nova / Ice Nova | Root the pack in place (Ice Nova also damages). Kite setup and stop-gap control. |
| Slow / Mass Slow | Single-target or AoE attack/move-speed slow for kiting affixes and casters. |
| Remove Curse | Dispel curses off allies — key for dispellable curse affixes/mechanics. |
| Blink / Shimmer | Core mobility; Shimmer is 2 charges, off the GCD, and usable while casting — the better M+ pick. |
| Slow Fall | Negate fall damage on yourself or an ally — vault/gap skips. |
📊 Stat Priority
Priority: Intellect > Mastery > Versatility > Critical Strike > Haste. But the secondaries are extremely close — the guides explicitly say to sim your own character rather than gear blindly to this order, and you'll often see Haste-favored builds early in Season 1 because of which gear unlocks first.
- Intellect — your primary; raw Spell Power. Always take the higher item level.
- Mastery: Savant — increases your mana pool and regen and the damage of Arcane Charges, so it directly fuels how much you can cast between Evocations. The most spec-defining secondary.
- Versatility — flat damage plus a little damage reduction; safe and consistent.
- Critical Strike — crits double damage; fine but flat.
- Haste — faster casts and resource flow; lowest in pure value but quality-of-life and often picked up incidentally.
DR breakpoints (rating → %): Mastery/Crit 1380 → 10%, 1840 → 20%; Haste 1320 → 10%, 1760 → 20%; Versatility 1620 → 10%, 2160 → 20%. Don't gear around these over item level.
🎁 Tier Set, Trinkets & Consumables
Tier set (Midnight S1): 2pc = each Arcane Charge increases your critical strike chance by 1% (so 4 Charges = +4% crit). 4pc = the critical strike damage of your Arcane spells is increased by 10%. It's a clean stat set with no playstyle impact — prioritize getting 4pc fast over which slots; the Rotmire chest is higher item level than its tier piece, so consider running tier in helm/shoulder/legs/gloves.
Top trinkets — Raid: on-use Vaelgor's Final Stare (lines up perfectly with Arcane Surge) + passive Gaze of the Alnseer. M+: on-use Emberwing Feather + passive Vessel of Tortured Souls. Always pair a strong on-use with your Surge burn.
Consumables: Flask of Thalassian Resistance · combat potion Light's Potential · Silvermoon Health Potion · food Quel'dorei Medley / Blooming Feast (feast) or Champion's Bento (personal) · Void-Touched Augment Rune · weapon oil Thalassian Phoenix Oil.
Gems: epic Indecipherable Eversong Diamond + rare Flawless Versatile Amethyst. Enchants: helm Empowered Blessing of Speed · chest Mark of the Worldsoul · shoulder Akil'zon's Swiftness · legs Arcanoweave Spellthread · rings Eyes of the Eagle · feet Farstrider's Hunt · weapon Acuity of the Ren'dorei.
🗝️ Mythic+ Tips
- Run Spellslinger — it significantly out-AoEs Sunfury (~20% on multi-target) while staying competitive on single-target, so it's the only M+ pick.
- On big pulls, build Salvo with Arcane Orb + Arcane Pulse, then Barrage at the lower AoE thresholds (<18 / <10 stacks) to keep cleave flowing instead of holding for 20.
- Track mana — Arcane is mana-gated. Plan an Evocation per pack rather than dry-casting Barrage to survive, and don't enter a pull near-empty.
- Spellsteal is a sleeper M+ pick: rip dangerous enemy buffs off casters/empowered mobs and gain the buff yourself.
- Use Shimmer (2 charges, off-GCD, castable while casting) over Blink for uptime; Ring of Frost / Frost Nova to control adds and kite affixes.
- Save Ice Block and Greater Invisibility for telegraphed dungeon one-shots; Alter Time + Prismatic Barrier handle the routine spike damage.
⌨️ Macros & Addons
WeakAuras is not supported in Midnight (12.0) — use Blizzard's built-in Cooldown Manager (importable configs on Wago.io) to track Arcane Charges, Arcane Salvo stacks, Clearcasting and Nether Precision. Addons: ElvUI, DBM/BigWigs, Details!, OmniCD.

🚫 Common Mistakes
- Free-casting Arcane Barrage — it resets your Arcane Charges and dumps Arcane Salvo stacks. Only fire it at the Polished Focus threshold (20 stacks ST, lower for AoE) or when out of mana.
- Pressing Arcane Surge before you have 20 Salvo stacks built — the burn lands weak and you've wasted a 90s cooldown.
- Letting Clearcasting / Nether Precision stacks fall off or overcap instead of spending them on Arcane Missiles before Arcane Blast.
- Running dry on mana mid-burn — forgetting to weave Evocation and being forced to spam weak Barrages to keep going.
- Not aligning Touch of the Magi with Arcane Surge, or failing to feed the Touch debuff window with your hardest hits.
- Saving Ice Block 'just in case' — it's a 3 min immunity, use it on telegraphed damage; same with Greater Invisibility and Alter Time.
