Holy Priest Guide
Holy is the reactive, rhythm-based Priest healer — a deep kit of short-cooldown spells (Prayer of Mending, Flash Heal, Renew, Prayer of Healing) that feed cooldown reduction into the two Holy Words, layered with the strongest single-target externals in the game (Guardian Spirit). In Midnight it raid-heals well and brings excellent healer damage, but its raw AoE/spot-heal throughput is mediocre and it lacks the burst-cooldown ceiling of the top healers, so it sits mid-pack in raid and lower in M+ where weak AoE healing under heavy pull damage is the bottleneck.

📊 Stat Priority
Raid: Intellect > Critical Strike > Versatility > Mastery > Haste. Mythic+: Intellect > Critical Strike > Versatility > Haste > Mastery.
The secondaries are close in value — don't reforge yourself in circles, and take item level almost every time. Reasoning:
- Critical Strike - best stat in both modes; crit heals are a big chunk of throughput and they double your Mastery HoT seed.
- Versatility - flat healing + damage + a little personal DR. Reliable and never wasted.
- Mastery (Echo of Light) - your direct heals leave a stacking HoT healing for a % of the initial heal over a few seconds, and it boosts Renew. Strong in sustained raid healing, weaker in bursty M+ where damage outpaces the HoT, which is why it drops below Haste for dungeons.
- Haste - more casts/ticks and faster Holy Word cooldowns; gains value in fast M+ pulls but is otherwise the lowest priority.
🎁 Tier Set, Trinkets & Consumables
Tier set (Midnight S1): 2pc = casting Benediction (upgraded Prayer of Mending) has a high chance to summon a Divine Image that mirrors your heals/damage. 4pc = your Divine Image lasts ~3s longer and its healing and damage are increased ~30%. Prioritize the Helm, Shoulders, Chest, and Hands; just getting the 2pc and 4pc bonuses matters more than the exact slots. The set strongly rewards keeping Prayer of Mending on cooldown.
Top trinkets — raid: Litany of Lightblind Wrath and Locus-Walker's Ribbon, with Light of the Cosmic Crescendo and Gaze of the Alnseer as runners-up. M+: Heart of Wind and Emerald Coach's Whistle scale well with the on-demand throughput dungeons want.
Gems: Indecipherable Eversong Diamond (helm) + Flawless Versatile Garnet (Versatility) — or a Crit gem if you're stacking crit. Enchants: weapon Acuity of the Ren'dorei; chest Mark of the Worldsoul; helm Empowered Hex of Leeching; shoulders Silvermoon's Mending; boots Shaladrassil's Roots; rings Eyes of the Eagle.

Real WarcraftLogs flask usage: Flask of the Shattered Sun 85% · Flask of the Magisters 10% · Flask of Thalassian Resistance 5%
Flask of the Shattered Sun dominates at about 85% of parses for the crit it provides Holy Priest; there is no meaningful runner-up flask for this build.
Eat the Harandar Celebration feast for the Well Fed buff that increases your primary stat (Intellect).
Pop Light's Potential together with Apotheosis or Divine Hymn for a throughput window; keep a Silvermoon Health Potion and a Demonic Healthstone for emergencies and use a Void-Touched Augment Rune for the extra stats.
Flask of the Shattered Sun dominates (~85% of parses); pair Light's Potential with Apotheosis or Divine Hymn for throughput windows.
🚀 Opener & Pull Ramp
Holy never reacts to the pull — it pre-heals it. Get your Mastery (Echo of Light) HoT seeds rolling and bank a Holy Word charge before damage lands so the group is already topped on the first hit, then convert to Smite/Holy Fire while everyone is healthy. Hold Apotheosis and Salvation for the first scripted spike, not the pull itself.
- Pre-cast
Renew on the tank (and yourself) a few seconds before the pull so a Mastery HoT is already ticking - Send Prayer of Mending out the moment combat starts (or pre-pull on the tank) so it is bouncing on the first hit and feeding
Benediction /
Divine Image - Bank a
Holy Word: Serenity charge before the pull so the tank-saver is ready for the opening tankbuster - For a stacked pull, pre-place Holy Word: Sanctify's healing zone where the group will fight
- Cast
Halo (Archon) as the pull lands for an instant burst of group healing plus damage - Open your damage with
Holy Fire →
Smite once the group is topped so you contribute throughput and build value - Hold
Apotheosis and Holy Word: Salvation for the fight's first real damage event — don't burn them on the pull
💫 Healing & Damage Priority
Holy is a priority healer, not a rotation. The core loop is: never sit on two Holy Word charges, keep Prayer of Mending rolling, and weave Smite/Holy Fire for damage when nobody needs a heal. Holy Words gate everything — cast Flash Heal / Prayer of Healing to reduce their cooldowns (Serendipity), then spend the charge.
- Prayer of Mending — keep it out on cooldown / before it reaches 2 charges (top priority; it is your most efficient heal and feeds
Benediction procs)
Holy Word: Serenity — big single-target heal for tank/spot damage (don't bank 2 charges)
Holy Word: Sanctify — AoE heal + a healing zone for stacked groups (don't bank 2 charges)- Spend
Surge of Light procs — instant
Flash Heal (
Lightweaver) or, with Archon's
Spiritwell, an instant
Prayer of Healing on the group
Renew on spread/rot damage and to keep Mastery (
Echo of Light) HoTs ticking
Flash Heal /
Heal to fuel Holy Word cooldown reduction and as your fast spot/efficient heals
Halo (Archon) on cooldown in damage windows — burst group heal + damage
Prayer of Healing on stacked AoE damage (high mana cost — see Mana)- When the group is topped:
Smite,
Holy Fire, and
Holy Nova (if talented) for damage — Holy's healer DPS is a real strength, so weave it constantly
💥 Raid Ramp & AoE Healing
Holy is a ramp spec: for scripted raid-wide damage you pre-cast 8-10s early so HoTs and Holy Words are already healing as the hit lands, then layer Apotheosis and a big cooldown on top. Stretch Renew across the raid first — it seeds your Mastery HoT on everyone — and spread Salvation, Divine Hymn and Apotheosis across separate damage events rather than stacking them.
- ~8-10s before a known raid hit, blanket the raid with
Renew so every Mastery (
Echo of Light) HoT is ticking before damage - Keep Prayer of Mending rolling into the ramp so it is bouncing and stacking heals as the hit arrives
- Pop
Apotheosis to supercharge Holy Word cooldown reduction and let you chain
Sanctify repeatedly - Cast
Holy Word: Sanctify on the stack for an AoE heal plus a standing healing zone - Release Holy Word: Salvation as the damage lands for the biggest raid-wide heal — or
Divine Hymn for a sustained stacked spike with its healing-taken buff - Spend
Surge of Light procs on instant Flash Heals (or
Prayer of Healing via Archon's
Spiritwell) to plug gaps mid-ramp - Mop up survivors with
Prayer of Healing only where the group is genuinely stacked — it is your mana sink, so don't spam it
⏱️ Healing Cooldowns
Holy's strength is layering many cooldowns rather than one big button. Pre-cast ramp before known raid damage (stack Renews + Prayer of Mending, then Apotheosis into Holy Words / Salvation).
🔵 Mana, Triage & Ramp
Holy lives and dies by spell selection, not a mana cooldown rotation. The efficiency ladder, cheapest to most expensive:
- Prayer of Mending / Renew / Holy Words - your efficient backbone. Holy Words heal for a lot relative to cost, and Prayer of Mending bounces for far more than its mana.
- Flash Heal / Heal - mid-cost spot heals; use Surge of Light procs (free instant Flash Heals) before hard-casting.
- Prayer of Healing - your mana sink. Spamming it drains your bar fast — reserve it for genuine stacked AoE damage, and prefer free Surge of Light / Spiritwell casts when possible.
Triage rule: match the heal to the damage. Don't Prayer of Healing a single dipped player; don't Flash-Heal-spam a raid-wide hit. When the group is healthy, switch to damage (Smite / Holy Fire / Holy Nova) — Holy's DPS is a tier strength and costs no opportunity if nobody needs healing.
Ramp (raid): Holy pre-heals known damage. The canonical ramp:
- ~8-10s before the hit, blanket the raid with Renew and roll out Prayer of Mending.
- Pop Apotheosis to supercharge Holy Word cooldown reduction.
- Chain Holy Word: Sanctify (+ Salvation if up) into the damage; follow with Divine Hymn for stacked spikes.
- Mop up with Surge of Light procs / Prayer of Healing.
🩹 Core Healing Spells
Your bread-and-butter heals and what each one is for. Lead with the efficient backbone (Prayer of Mending, Renew, the Holy Words) and save the expensive Prayer of Healing for genuine stacked AoE.
💚 Personal Defensives
Holy is squishy for a healer, so layer these on predictable hits aimed at you and keep casting instead of scrambling to self-heal. Most are short cooldowns — use them freely on telegraphed damage.
🧰 Utility & Crowd Control
| Ability | Use |
|---|---|
| Purify | Single-target dispel — removes Magic and Disease from allies. Mouseover/click-cast it for affixes and raid debuffs. |
| Mass Dispel | AoE dispel — clears Magic from up to 5 allies and removes some otherwise-undispellable effects (and enemy Magic immunities). A signature Priest utility button. |
| Psychic Scream | AoE fear — emergency CC / peel for a whole pack. |
| Leap of Faith (Grip) | Pull an ally to you — save someone from a mechanic or reposition a straggler. Mouseover macro it. |
| Body and Soul / Phantasm | Power Word: Shield / Fade grant a burst of move speed — your main mobility and a snare break. |
| Power Word: Shield | Off-spec absorb for emergency mitigation and to proc Body and Soul speed. |
| Power Infusion | +25% Haste external — hand to a DPS for their burst, or self-cast in a ramp. |
| Guardian Spirit / Symbol of Hope | Externals — cheat-death + healing amp on one target; raid-wide mana/CDR on the other. |
| Fade | Threat drop + (with Phantasm) snare break and brief dodge. Use to shed adds and avoid avoidable damage. |
| Desperate Prayer | Personal defensive — instant self-heal + max-health buff. |
🗝️ Mythic+ Tips
- Holy's M+ weakness is raw AoE healing under sustained pull damage — pre-ramp with
Renew + Prayer of Mending before a big pull, then lead with
Apotheosis →
Holy Word: Sanctify so the heals are already landing as damage hits. - Keep Prayer of Mending bouncing at all times — in a moving pack it heals constantly for almost no mana and powers your tier set's
Divine Image. - Run Archon for M+: each
Halo is a reliable burst of group healing + damage, which patches the spec's spot-heal gap better than Oracle's passive style.
Holy Word: Serenity is your tank-saver — bank it for tankbusters, not random topping-off; don't sit on 2 charges.- Weave
Smite /
Holy Fire /
Halo damage aggressively whenever the group is stable — strong healer DPS is one of Holy's best M+ contributions to the timer.
Mass Dispel is huge for dungeon Magic affixes and packs with dispellable buffs;
Purify single targets,
Mass Dispel the group.- Drink at every break — M+ is short bursts, so favor throughput over efficiency, and use Symbol of Hope to refund the whole group's mana on long routes.
As of Patch 12.0.5, the Nebulous Voidcore lets you target gear via Bonus Loot rolls after Season 1 Raid bosses, Mythic+ dungeons, Bountiful Delves, and Nightmare Prey Hunts — a controlled way to chase Holy Priest BiS instead of praying to normal drops. A Bonus Roll after a M+ dungeon awards the Great Vault item level for that keystone level, so +10 and above can give 1/6 Myth-track pieces. Intellect from item level scales every heal, so spend weekly cores on your best raid trinkets and the tier 4pc that powers your Divine Image.
⌨️ Macros & Addons
WeakAuras is not supported in Midnight (12.0) — use Blizzard's built-in Cooldown Manager (importable strings on Wago.io). Addons: ElvUI or VuhDo/Grid2 for click-cast healing frames, DBM/BigWigs, GTFO, OmniCD for raid cooldown tracking.

🚫 Common Mistakes
- Sitting on two charges of a Holy Word — it caps cooldown reduction and wastes
Serendipity. Spend before you hit 2 charges. - Letting Prayer of Mending fall off — it's your most efficient heal AND your tier-set engine; it should almost never be sitting on cooldown.
- Spamming
Prayer of Healing — it's your biggest mana drain; reserve it for real stacked AoE and prefer free
Surge of Light /
Spiritwell casts. - Reactive-only healing in raid — Holy is a ramp spec; if you wait for damage to land instead of pre-casting
Renew +
Apotheosis, you fall behind. - Never dealing damage — Holy's DPS is a genuine strength; standing idle while the group is topped throws away a big chunk of your value.
- Hoarding
Guardian Spirit — it's a ~1 min cooldown cheat-death, not a once-a-fight panic button; use it on tankbusters and to save players freely. - Forgetting
Mass Dispel — many players only use
Purify;
Mass Dispel clears whole-group Magic and otherwise-immune effects and wins pulls.
