Fire Mage Guide
Fire is Midnight's classic crit-chaining burst caster — you fish for critical strikes to fuel Hot Streak, then dump instant Pyroblasts inside a hard-hitting Combustion window. Combustion still hits like a truck, but the Midnight rework shortened Combustion uptime and pushed more damage outside of it onto RNG crit-fishing, so sustained throughput sags between windows. Pair that with a fragile cloth-caster defensive kit and Fire lands at C tier this season — explosive on burst, but behind the field on consistent damage and survivability.

📊 Stat Priority
Priority (general PvE): Intellect / Item Level > the secondary stats, which sit close together and shuffle based on your exact gear. As a starting point most current builds run Haste ≈ Critical Strike > Mastery > Versatility, but all secondaries hit diminishing returns, so a SimulationCraft run on your own character is the only real answer.
- Intellect / Item Level - by far the biggest gain; almost always take the higher ilvl piece.
- Haste - faster casts, more Fire Blast charges and more instants during Combustion — pace and burst density.
- Critical Strike - Fire is a crit-fishing spec; more crit means more Hot Streak procs outside Combustion.
- Mastery (Ignite) - scales your Ignite DoT and crit damage; strong but behind Haste/Crit for most builds.
- Versatility - flat damage plus a little defense; the dump stat offensively but nice for survivability.
🎁 Tier Set, Trinkets & Consumables
Tier set (via Catalyst if needed): 2pc — Fire Blast and Flamestrike deal 8% increased damage. 4pc — casting Pyroblast or Flamestrike reduces Fire Blast's cooldown by 0.5s, fueling longer instant-cast chains in Combustion. Both bonuses are real upgrades — prioritize the 4pc before optimizing other slots.
Top trinkets: S-tier Gaze of the Alnseer and Emberwing Feather (Emberwing is the strongest pre-raid/M+ pickup from Mythic dungeons). A-tier: Shadow of the Empyrean Requiem, Vaelgor's Final Stare, Heart of Wind, Glorious Crusader's Keepsake. Grab any raid trinket you can, even from Normal/LFR.
- Flask - Flask of the Magisters (DPS), or Flask of Thalassian Resistance when you need to survive.
- Combat potion - Light's Potential.
- Food - Silvermoon Parade.
- Augment rune - Void-Touched Augment Rune.
- Weapon oil - Thalassian Phoenix Oil.
- Gems - Indecipherable Eversong Diamond (unique) + Flawless Masterful Peridot.
- Enchants - Radiant Jewelbinder (head/wrist/waist), Acuity of the Ren'dorei (weapon), Sunfire Silk Spellthread (legs).

Real WarcraftLogs flask usage: Flask of the Magisters 75% · Flask of the Blood Knights 20% · Flask of the Shattered Sun 5%
Fire overwhelmingly favors Flask of the Magisters (Intellect) at 75% of top parses; Flask of the Shattered Sun (Critical Strike) is the runner-up if you stack crit.
Eat Silvermoon Parade for the Well Fed buff that grants your primary stat (Intellect); as a caster, Champion's Bento is a solid personal-food backup when no feast is out.
Use Light's Potential on your cooldown burst windows; carry a Silvermoon Health Potion and Demonic Healthstone for emergencies and a Void-Touched Augment Rune for progression pulls.
WCL: Fire overwhelmingly favors Flask of the Magisters (75%) and the Hearty Well Fed food buff (top-rank feast or Champion's Bento).
🚀 Opener
Pre-cast into the pull, bank max Fire Blast charges, and align Combustion with Meteor for the burst. With Firestarter, your first Combustion can wait until the target drops below 90% (Firestarter already guarantees crits above 90%).
- Pre-cast
Fireball so it lands as the pull starts
Combustion (right as
Fireball lands — everything now crits)
Meteor (line it up to land inside the
Combustion window)- Instant
Pyroblast with the
Hot Streak from the opener crits
Fire Blast to convert Heating Up →
Hot Streak, then
Pyroblast again- Hard-cast
Pyroblast with a
Pyroclasm stack if 3s+ remain on
Combustion
Frostfire Bolt as the generator between instants- Pop your Arcane Phoenix / Spellfire Sphere burst (Sunfury) in this window
- When
Combustion ends, fall into the single-target priority below
⚔️ Single-Target Priority
Outside Combustion you are crit-fishing: bank Fire Blast charges, never overcap Heating Up, and hold a Pyroclasm stack for the next Combustion when you can.
Combustion when ready → switch to the burst priority
Pyroblast during
Hyperthermia (free guaranteed crits)
Meteor on cooldown — but hold it for
Combustion if the window is close- Instant
Pyroblast with
Hot Streak after a
Frostfire Bolt /
Fireball finishes (cast so both land together) - Hard-cast
Pyroblast with a
Pyroclasm stack (try to keep one banked for
Combustion)
Scorch with a
Heat Shimmer proc if you have no
Hot Streak up
Fire Blast to convert Heating Up →
Hot Streak (don't overcap charges)
Frostfire Bolt as the filler generator
Fireball as the filler generator when not moving
💥 AoE / Multi-Target Priority
Same skeleton as single-target — at 4+ targets you simply swap Pyroblast for Flamestrike on Hot Streak. Never replace a Fireball cast with Flamestrike, and during Firestarter keep casting Pyroblast (it guarantees crits, Flamestrike does not).
Combustion on cooldown → burst priority
Meteor on cooldown (great AoE chunk + Ignite spread)
Flamestrike with
Hot Streak at 4+ targets (
Pyroblast at 1–3)- Hard-cast
Flamestrike with a
Pyroclasm stack
Fire Blast to convert Heating Up →
Hot Streak for another instant
Flamestrike
Phoenix Flames to spread Ignite between packs
Scorch on the move with
Heat Shimmer
Frostfire Bolt /
Fireball as the filler generator (never overwrite with
Flamestrike)
⏱️ Cooldowns
Combustion is everything — almost all of your burst lives in it. Pool resources before it and line up Meteor + Pyroclasm so nothing is wasted. Use Combustion on cooldown in M+; in raid, delay only slightly to catch a priority-add burst window.
💚 Defensive Toolkit
Cloth-caster survivability — there's no immunity anymore. Layer a barrier with Ice Cold and use Alter Time / Greater Invisibility to erase big hits. Plan defensives ahead; you are squishy if you faceroll into mechanics.
🧰 Utility & Crowd Control
| Ability | Use |
|---|---|
| Counterspell | Primary interrupt (25s CD). Use a mouseover/focus macro to kick without swapping target. |
| Dragon's Breath | Frontal disorient (~4s) in a short cone — AoE soft-CC / interrupt a clustered pack. |
| Polymorph | Single-target sheep — long CC for skips, healing breaks, or pulling control. |
| Ring of Frost | AoE incapacitate zone — set up CC on a pack before the pull. |
| Spellsteal | Grab beneficial enemy buffs (and strip dangerous ones). Repeatable on a managed cooldown. |
| Remove Curse | Decurse — clears dangerous curse-type debuffs from allies and yourself. |
| Shimmer | Two-charge blink off the GCD — core mobility and instant repositioning mid-cast. |
| Time Warp | Raid/party Bloodlust effect (Heroism/Time Warp) — pop on pull or first big burst window. |
| Mass Barrier | Party-wide absorb shields — a small raid external for incoming AoE. |
🗝️ Mythic+ Tips
- Cast
Combustion on cooldown and try to enter every window with max
Fire Blast charges plus a
Hot Streak/Heating Up ready — the goal is to spend as little of the window hard-casting
Scorch as possible. - Line
Meteor up with
Combustion when the timers are close; otherwise use
Meteor on cooldown for the Ignite spread. - At 3+ targets you're in AoE: swap
Hot Streak Pyroblasts for
Flamestrike, but keep casting
Pyroblast during
Firestarter (it guarantees crits,
Flamestrike doesn't). - Sunfury with
Scorch is the M+ default — huge mobility lets you keep doing damage while repositioning through mechanics. - Use
Counterspell on a mouseover/focus macro;
Dragon's Breath and
Ring of Frost handle add control and skips;
Remove Curse for curse affixes. - Plan defensives ahead —
Ice Cold (70% DR) for unavoidable hits,
Alter Time pre-cast to rewind a spike,
Greater Invisibility to drop target on a deadly cast. - Pop
Time Warp on the first big pull or a key boss burst window for the group
Bloodlust.
As of Patch 12.0.5, the Nebulous Voidcore lets you target gear via Bonus Loot rolls after Season 1 Raid bosses, Mythic+ dungeons, Bountiful Delves, and Nightmare Prey Hunts — a controlled way to chase Fire BiS instead of praying to normal drops. A Bonus Roll after a M+ dungeon awards the Great Vault item level for that keystone level, so +10 and above can give 1/6 Myth-track pieces. Spend your weekly cores on the S-tier trinkets and on finishing the tier set that shortens Fire Blast's cooldown in Combustion.
⌨️ Macros & Addons
WeakAuras is not supported in Midnight (12.0) — use Blizzard's built-in Cooldown Manager (importable configs on Wago.io) to track Hot Streak, Heating Up, Fire Blast charges, and Combustion. Addons: ElvUI, DBM/BigWigs, Details!, OmniCD.

🚫 Common Mistakes
- Entering
Combustion without banked
Fire Blast charges — you waste the guaranteed-crit window hard-casting instead of chaining instant Pyroblasts. - Overcapping Heating Up / sitting on
Hot Streak — dropping procs is the single biggest sustained-damage loss outside
Combustion. - Letting
Pyroclasm hit 2 stacks or expire unused — bank one for
Combustion, then spend the rest before they cap. - Using
Meteor randomly when it could have landed inside
Combustion a few seconds later — that's a big chunk of misaligned burst. - Casting
Flamestrike at 1–3 targets, or overwriting a
Fireball cast with
Flamestrike — both are throughput losses. - Treating
Ice Cold like the old
Ice Block — it's 70% DR, not immunity, so it won't save you from a one-shot or clear a debuff. - Standing still as Sunfury —
Scorch and
Shimmer exist so you keep doing damage on the move; eating avoidable hits as a squishy cloth caster is a fast way to die.
