Fire Mage Guide

C raidC m+updated 2026-06-18

Fire is Midnight's classic crit-chaining burst caster — you fish for critical strikes to fuel Hot Streak, then dump instant Pyroblasts inside a hard-hitting Combustion window. Combustion still hits like a truck, but the Midnight rework shortened Combustion uptime and pushed more damage outside of it onto RNG crit-fishing, so sustained throughput sags between windows. Pair that with a fragile cloth-caster defensive kit and Fire lands at C tier this season — explosive on burst, but behind the field on consistent damage and survivability.

SunfuryBothThe community default in both raid and M+. Built around Spellfire Spheres and Arcane Phoenix, which feed each other for extra damage, Haste, and Fire Blast cooldown reduction. Runs with Scorch for huge mobility — you do a large chunk of your damage on the move while giving up only a sliver of throughput. Easiest to live with and only a hair behind Frostfire on paper.
FrostfireRaidVery slightly ahead of Sunfury in pure single-target raid sims but undertuned and rarely played. Passive playstyle — instant Frostfire Bolt procs plus the Meteor / Comet Storm combo apply Ignite from multiple sources. Lacks Sunfury's Scorch mobility, so most players take Sunfury anyway.

🎲 Bonus Roll Targets where to spend Nebulous Voidcores

As of Patch 12.0.5, the Nebulous Voidcore lets you target gear via Bonus Loot rolls after Season 1 Raid bosses, Mythic+ dungeons, Bountiful Delves, and Nightmare Prey Hunts — a controlled way to chase Fire BiS instead of praying to normal drops. A Bonus Roll after a M+ dungeon awards the Great Vault item level for that keystone level, so +10 and above can give 1/6 Myth-track pieces. Spend your weekly cores on the S-tier trinkets and on finishing the tier set that shortens Fire Blast's cooldown in Combustion.

1
Chimaerus Raid
Your BiS trinket from this boss
Top priority. your BiS trinket is an S-tier Fire trinket, so any roll that can land it is high value — keep rolling Chimaerus until it drops.
2
Mythic+ dungeons Mythic+
Emberwing Feather
S-tier and the strongest pre-raid / M+ pickup, dropping from Mythic dungeons. Roll the dungeon that holds it — rolls pay out at your keystone's Great Vault item level, so push +10 or higher for Myth-track.
3
Tier set token bosses Raid
Class set 4pc (Fire Blast cooldown bonus)
The 2pc boosts Fire Blast and Flamestrike, and the 4pc shaves Fire Blast's cooldown when you cast Pyroblast or Flamestrike — fueling longer instant chains in Combustion. Prioritize finishing the 4pc, so roll whichever tier-token boss completes your set.
4
Season 1 raid boss Raid
Vaelgor's Final Stare (A-tier raid trinket)
Solid A-tier alternative if your Gaze rolls aren't landing — grab any raid trinket you can, even from Normal/LFR, while you chase the S-tier picks.
💡 Roll where the useful loot table is smallest and the payoff is biggest — a dungeon whose table holds Emberwing Feather beats a raid boss with a dozen items you'll skip. Pick the toggle for the content you actually run.

🚀 Opener

Pre-cast into the pull, bank max Fire Blast charges, and align Combustion with Meteor for the burst. With Firestarter, your first Combustion can wait until the target drops below 90% (Firestarter already guarantees crits above 90%).

  1. Pre-cast Fireball so it lands as the pull starts
  2. Combustion (right as Fireball lands — everything now crits)
  3. Meteor (line it up to land inside the Combustion window)
  4. Instant Pyroblast with the Hot Streak from the opener crits
  5. Fire Blast to convert Heating Up → Hot Streak, then Pyroblast again
  6. Hard-cast Pyroblast with a Pyroclasm stack if 3s+ remain on Combustion
  7. Frostfire Bolt as the generator between instants
  8. Pop your Arcane Phoenix / Spellfire Sphere burst (Sunfury) in this window
  9. When Combustion ends, fall into the single-target priority below

⚔️ Single-Target Priority

Outside Combustion you are crit-fishing: bank Fire Blast charges, never overcap Heating Up, and hold a Pyroclasm stack for the next Combustion when you can.

  1. Combustion when ready → switch to the burst priority
  2. Pyroblast during Hyperthermia (free guaranteed crits)
  3. Meteor on cooldown — but hold it for Combustion if the window is close
  4. Instant Pyroblast with Hot Streak after a Frostfire Bolt / Fireball finishes (cast so both land together)
  5. Hard-cast Pyroblast with a Pyroclasm stack (try to keep one banked for Combustion)
  6. Scorch with a Heat Shimmer proc if you have no Hot Streak up
  7. Fire Blast to convert Heating Up → Hot Streak (don't overcap charges)
  8. Frostfire Bolt as the filler generator
  9. Fireball as the filler generator when not moving

💥 AoE / Multi-Target Priority

Same skeleton as single-target — at 4+ targets you simply swap Pyroblast for Flamestrike on Hot Streak. Never replace a Fireball cast with Flamestrike, and during Firestarter keep casting Pyroblast (it guarantees crits, Flamestrike does not).

  1. Combustion on cooldown → burst priority
  2. Meteor on cooldown (great AoE chunk + Ignite spread)
  3. Flamestrike with Hot Streak at 4+ targets (Pyroblast at 1–3)
  4. Hard-cast Flamestrike with a Pyroclasm stack
  5. Fire Blast to convert Heating Up → Hot Streak for another instant Flamestrike
  6. Phoenix Flames to spread Ignite between packs
  7. Scorch on the move with Heat Shimmer
  8. Frostfire Bolt / Fireball as the filler generator (never overwrite with Flamestrike)

⏱️ Cooldowns

Combustion is everything — almost all of your burst lives in it. Pool resources before it and line up Meteor + Pyroclasm so nothing is wasted. Use Combustion on cooldown in M+; in raid, delay only slightly to catch a priority-add burst window.

Combustion60s
Your defining cooldown: for ~10–12s every spell is a guaranteed critical strike, so you chain instant Pyroblasts. Enter with full Fire Blast charges and a Hot Streak/Heating Up ready. Spend as little of the window as possible hard-casting.
Meteor30s
Big single hit that drops an Ignite-spreading pool. Pair it with Combustion when the windows align (delay Meteor if it would otherwise fall outside Combustion by only a few seconds); otherwise use on cooldown.
Fire Blast~12s (charges)
Instant that converts Heating Up → Hot Streak on demand. The engine of Combustion — the 4pc tier bonus and the Fired Up apex talent both shave its cooldown so you can chain instants. Bank charges before Combustion.
Phoenix Flames~25s (charges)
Instant Fire hit that splashes to nearby enemies and helps spread Ignite. Useful filler crit source and add-cleave glue, especially in M+.
Fired Up (Apex)passive proc
Midnight's new apex talent. Consuming Hot Streak has a chance to grant Fired Up, increasing your Fire damage and reducing Fire Blast's cooldown — more instants, more Combustion throughput.

💚 Defensive Toolkit

Cloth-caster survivability — there's no immunity anymore. Layer a barrier with Ice Cold and use Alter Time / Greater Invisibility to erase big hits. Plan defensives ahead; you are squishy if you faceroll into mechanics.

Ice Cold~3 min
Replaces the old Ice Block immunity — 70% damage reduction for 6s instead of full invuln. Your panic button for a hit you can't dodge; it no longer purges debuffs the way an immunity would.
Alter Time~1 min
Snapshots your position and health, then returns you to both after 10s. Pre-cast it before a big hit to rewind the damage, and it counteracts knockbacks — a core survival and mobility tool.
Blazing Barrier~25s
Absorb shield that now heals you for 15% of the damage it absorbs (Improved Blazing Barrier). Keep it up as a baseline buffer in melee-heavy content.
Greater Invisibility~2 min
20s of being untargetable (with a brief instant-drop of threat) plus a strong damage reduction while it lasts. Drops mob target, dodges targeted casts, and gives a move-speed boost.
Mirror Image~2 min
Summons 3 copies that soak hits and drop your threat. Minor personal mitigation and a threat reset on bad pulls.

🧰 Utility & Crowd Control

AbilityUse
CounterspellPrimary interrupt (25s CD). Use a mouseover/focus macro to kick without swapping target.
Dragon's BreathFrontal disorient (~4s) in a short cone — AoE soft-CC / interrupt a clustered pack.
PolymorphSingle-target sheep — long CC for skips, healing breaks, or pulling control.
Ring of FrostAoE incapacitate zone — set up CC on a pack before the pull.
SpellstealGrab beneficial enemy buffs (and strip dangerous ones). Repeatable on a managed cooldown.
Remove CurseDecurse — clears dangerous curse-type debuffs from allies and yourself.
ShimmerTwo-charge blink off the GCD — core mobility and instant repositioning mid-cast.
Time WarpRaid/party Bloodlust effect (Heroism/Time Warp) — pop on pull or first big burst window.
Mass BarrierParty-wide absorb shields — a small raid external for incoming AoE.

📊 Stat Priority

Priority (general PvE): Intellect / Item Level > the secondary stats, which sit close together and shuffle based on your exact gear. As a starting point most current builds run Haste ≈ Critical Strike > Mastery > Versatility, but all secondaries hit diminishing returns, so a SimulationCraft run on your own character is the only real answer.

  • Intellect / Item Level - by far the biggest gain; almost always take the higher ilvl piece.
  • Haste - faster casts, more Fire Blast charges and more instants during Combustion — pace and burst density.
  • Critical Strike - Fire is a crit-fishing spec; more crit means more Hot Streak procs outside Combustion.
  • Mastery (Ignite) - scales your Ignite DoT and crit damage; strong but behind Haste/Crit for most builds.
  • Versatility - flat damage plus a little defense; the dump stat offensively but nice for survivability.
⚠️ Do not gear around a fixed stat weight. Fire's secondaries are so close and so DR-sensitive that the order flips with item level — re-sim after big upgrades.
Tertiaries: Avoidance trims AoE damage, Leech sustains you, Speed helps dodge mechanics.

🎁 Tier Set, Trinkets & Consumables

Tier set (via Catalyst if needed): 2pc — Fire Blast and Flamestrike deal 8% increased damage. 4pc — casting Pyroblast or Flamestrike reduces Fire Blast's cooldown by 0.5s, fueling longer instant-cast chains in Combustion. Both bonuses are real upgrades — prioritize the 4pc before optimizing other slots.

Top trinkets: S-tier Gaze of the Alnseer and Emberwing Feather (Emberwing is the strongest pre-raid/M+ pickup from Mythic dungeons). A-tier: Shadow of the Empyrean Requiem, Vaelgor's Final Stare, Heart of Wind, Glorious Crusader's Keepsake. Grab any raid trinket you can, even from Normal/LFR.

  • Flask - Flask of the Magisters (DPS), or Flask of Thalassian Resistance when you need to survive.
  • Combat potion - Light's Potential.
  • Food - Silvermoon Parade.
  • Augment rune - Void-Touched Augment Rune.
  • Weapon oil - Thalassian Phoenix Oil.
  • Gems - Indecipherable Eversong Diamond (unique) + Flawless Masterful Peridot.
  • Enchants - Radiant Jewelbinder (head/wrist/waist), Acuity of the Ren'dorei (weapon), Sunfire Silk Spellthread (legs).
📡 The live panel above shows what the current top-50 Fire Mages are actually equipping — trust that over static BiS when they disagree, since trinkets and stat order shift with gear.

🗝️ Mythic+ Tips

  • Cast Combustion on cooldown and try to enter every window with max Fire Blast charges plus a Hot Streak/Heating Up ready — the goal is to spend as little of the window hard-casting Scorch as possible.
  • Line Meteor up with Combustion when the timers are close; otherwise use Meteor on cooldown for the Ignite spread.
  • At 3+ targets you're in AoE: swap Hot Streak Pyroblasts for Flamestrike, but keep casting Pyroblast during Firestarter (it guarantees crits, Flamestrike doesn't).
  • Sunfury with Scorch is the M+ default — huge mobility lets you keep doing damage while repositioning through mechanics.
  • Use Counterspell on a mouseover/focus macro; Dragon's Breath and Ring of Frost handle add control and skips; Remove Curse for curse affixes.
  • Plan defensives ahead — Ice Cold (70% DR) for unavoidable hits, Alter Time pre-cast to rewind a spike, Greater Invisibility to drop target on a deadly cast.
  • Pop Time Warp on the first big pull or a key boss burst window for the group Bloodlust.

⌨️ Macros & Addons

WeakAuras is not supported in Midnight (12.0) — use Blizzard's built-in Cooldown Manager (importable configs on Wago.io) to track Hot Streak, Heating Up, Fire Blast charges, and Combustion. Addons: ElvUI, DBM/BigWigs, Details!, OmniCD.

🚫 Common Mistakes

  • Entering Combustion without banked Fire Blast charges — you waste the guaranteed-crit window hard-casting instead of chaining instant Pyroblasts.
  • Overcapping Heating Up / sitting on Hot Streak — dropping procs is the single biggest sustained-damage loss outside Combustion.
  • Letting Pyroclasm hit 2 stacks or expire unused — bank one for Combustion, then spend the rest before they cap.
  • Using Meteor randomly when it could have landed inside Combustion a few seconds later — that's a big chunk of misaligned burst.
  • Casting Flamestrike at 1–3 targets, or overwriting a Fireball cast with Flamestrike — both are throughput losses.
  • Treating Ice Cold like the old Ice Block — it's 70% DR, not immunity, so it won't save you from a one-shot or clear a debuff.
  • Standing still as Sunfury — Scorch and Shimmer exist so you keep doing damage on the move; eating avoidable hits as a squishy cloth caster is a fast way to die.
