Restoration Shaman Guide

B raidA m+updated 2026-06-18

Restoration Shaman is Midnight's premier Mythic+ healer: it is the only healer with a real interrupt (Wind Shear) and it stacks elite group cooldowns — Spirit Link Totem's redistribute + 15% DR and Healing Tide Totem's burst raid heal — on top of free DPS. That utility package and totem-based AoE healing put it firmly A-tier in M+. In raid it sits a notch lower (B) because single-target ramp and movement are clunkier than the top throughput healers, though it remains fully viable on any boss.

TotemicBothThe default for all content in Midnight S1. Pumps most of your healing through totems — Healing Stream, Surging Totem, Stormstream Totem — with Lively Totems firing automatic Chain Heals. Endless instant AoE healing and repositionable totems make it forgiving on movement-heavy fights and the easiest to optimize. With Whispering Waves removed from Farseer, Totemic is the stronger tree nearly everywhere.
FarseerRaidSpell-control tree — buffs Riptide, Healing Wave and Chain Heal and spawns Ancestors via Unleash Life / Ancestral Swiftness that echo your casts. More impactful individual casts and stronger spot/burst healing, but less passive group healing than Totemic. A reasonable raid-progression pick when you want hands-on throughput, but it lost power with the Whispering Waves removal.

🎲 Bonus Roll Targets where to spend Nebulous Voidcores

As of Patch 12.0.5, the Nebulous Voidcore lets you target gear via Bonus Loot rolls after Season 1 Raid bosses, Mythic+ dungeons, Bountiful Delves, and Nightmare Prey Hunts — the controlled way to chase Resto's healing BiS instead of praying to the Vault. A Bonus Roll after a M+ dungeon awards the Great Vault item level for that keystone level, so +10 and above can drop 1/6 Myth-track pieces. Spend your weekly cores on the slots that move HPS most: your passive-stat trinkets (your BiS trinket, Locus-Walker's Ribbon) and the four tier pieces that build your set from Shoulders, Chest, Legs and Gloves.

1
Chimaerus Raid
Your BiS trinket from this boss
Top raid target. your BiS trinket is a premier passive-stat trinket and a big chunk of your throughput — keep rolling Chimaerus until it drops, then this same roll can backfill your tier chest token.
2
Belo'ren Raid
Your BiS trinket from this boss
You really only want the Plume trinkets here and the rest of the table is short, so the odds of hitting one are relatively high — a strong, focused second roll for a passive stat stick.
3
The Seat of the Triumvirate Mythic+
Tier and off-set Crit pieces
Best M+ roll target. Rolls pay out at your keystone's Great Vault item level, so push +10 or higher for Myth-track armor — this is also where you grind the off-set helm slot so you can keep your 4-set on Shoulders/Chest/Legs/Gloves.
4
Rotmire Raid
Almost everything (avoid Sporecaller's Blooming Loop)
A safe catch-up roll — the table is short and, as long as you dodge the Sporecaller's Blooming Loop, the rest is useful gear or tier-track armor to round out your set.
💡 Roll where the useful table is smallest — a boss whose drops are mostly trinkets/tier you want gives far better odds than one with ten cloth/leather pieces you'll vendor. Pick the toggle for the content you actually run.

🚀 Opener & Pull Ramp

Resto's opener is a light pre-ramp: get HoTs and totems rolling before the pull so passive healing is already live, then contribute damage while the group is healthy. Save the big raid cooldowns for the fight's first scripted spike, not the pull itself.

  1. Pre-cast Riptide on the tank (and yourself) a few seconds before the pull so a HoT is already ticking
  2. Drop Healing Stream Totem / Stormstream Totem before engaging so passive healing is live on the first hit
  3. Lay Healing Rain (Totemic) / Surging Totem on the spot the group will stack
  4. Unleash Life into the group right before damage to pre-buff your first big heal (and bank the 4pc value)
  5. Open your damage with Flame Shock → Lava Burst so you contribute throughput while everyone is topped
  6. Hold Spirit Link Totem and Healing Tide Totem for the first real damage event — don't burn them on the pull

🔄 Healing & Damage Priority

Resto generates throughput by keeping totems down, tagging targets with Riptide before Chain Heal, and spending Nature's/Ancestral Swiftness for free instant juice. Riptide is the engine — it powers Stormstream Totem procs and makes Chain Heal jumps ~20% stronger. When nobody is in danger, weave damage to keep mana in line with boss HP.

  1. Keep Healing Stream Totem / Stormstream Totem down — refresh on cooldown and dump at max charges; Stormstream is your big totem-heal proc
  2. Cast Riptide on cooldown (it tags targets for stronger Chain Heal and feeds Stormstream Totem procs)
  3. Cast Unleash Life and Ancestral Swiftness to buff your next heal and spawn Ancestors (Farseer)
  4. Nature's Swiftness on cooldown — spend it on Chain Heal for a free instant, juiced cast (also guarantees a Stormstream proc)
  5. Drop Healing Rain (Totemic) / Surging Totem where the group is standing for sustained AoE
  6. Chain Heal on a clustered, Riptide-tagged group for efficient AoE
  7. Healing Wave for efficient single-target topping; Healing Surge only when you need a fast emergency heal
  8. Wellspring / Downpour for an instant burst-AoE top when the group is spread
  9. Damage filler when nobody is in danger: Flame Shock up, then Lava Burst on Lava Surge procs, Lightning Bolt as the free filler

💥 Raid Ramp & AoE Healing

For scripted raid-wide damage, ramp a few seconds early so HoTs and totems are already healing as the hit lands, then layer a cooldown on top. Spread your three big cooldowns across separate damage events rather than stacking them.

  1. ~3–4s before a known raid hit, blanket Riptides across the group (with Totemic this also feeds Lively Totems' automatic Chain Heals)
  2. Make sure Healing Rain / Surging Totem is on the stack and Healing Stream / Stormstream Totem is rolling
  3. Cast Unleash Life, then Chain Heal into the Riptide-tagged stack for chained AoE
  4. Release Healing Tide Totem as the damage lands for sustained raid output — or Spirit Link Totem if the hit needs the 15% DR + health averaging
  5. Plug mid-ramp gaps with a Nature's / Ancestral Swiftness instant Chain Heal
  6. Wellspring / Downpour for an instant top when the raid is spread out of Chain Heal range
  7. Ascendance for the heaviest sustained-AoE windows (always-crit Healing Wave + 3 extra Chain Heal jumps)

⏱️ Healing Cooldowns

Resto's strength is its raid-cooldown suite. Spirit Link and Healing Tide are the carry buttons — plan them onto known damage events. Don't stack everything on one spike; rotate them across the fight.

Spirit Link Totem3 min
Signature button. Redistributes the health of everyone inside it AND grants 15% damage reduction for its duration. Drop it on a stacked group right before a big hit — it pseudo-saves players who would otherwise die by averaging health, then mitigates the blow. One of the best raid cooldowns in the game.
Healing Tide Totem3 min
Massive non-channeled burst raid heal — pulses heals to allies within 40 yards for its duration while you keep doing everything else. Your go-to answer to raid-wide AoE damage. Talent choice node with Ascendance.
Ascendance3 min (→2 min talented)
Throughput cooldown. Instantly heals nearby injured allies, makes Healing Wave always crit, gives Chain Heal 3 extra jumps, and cuts mana costs ~25% for the duration. The Farseer/empowerment burst window; choice node with Healing Tide.
Mana Tide Totem3 min
Restores mana to you and allies over its duration. Your sustain button — pop it in a calmer window to refill before the next heavy phase, not while capped.
Ancestral Guidance2 min
For a short window, a portion of your damage and healing is mirrored as extra smart healing to injured allies. Use it during your damage-and-heal overlap for a throughput spike on incoming AoE.
Earthen Wall Totem1 min
Plants a totem that absorbs damage for allies near it, soaking a shared pool. Great pre-placed mitigation for a stacked group eating predictable melee/AoE.
Spiritwalker's Grace2 min
Lets you hard-cast Healing Wave / Chain Heal / damage spells while moving. The button that lets Resto keep healing through heavy-movement phases — bank it for them.

🩹 Core Healing Spells

Your bread-and-butter heals and what each one is for. Lead with the efficient tools and save the expensive ones for emergencies.

Riptideinstant, charges
Your engine: an instant HoT + direct heal that tags the target so the next Chain Heal jumps ~20% harder and feeds Stormstream Totem procs. Keep it rolling on cooldown.
Chain Healefficient AoE
Smart bouncing heal between nearby injured allies — your main AoE button. Much stronger on Riptide-tagged targets, so always tag first.
Healing Waveefficient ST
Mana-efficient single-target cast heal for steady topping when no one is about to die.
Healing Surgefast, expensive
Fast emergency single-target heal. High mana cost — only when a target will die without it.
Healing Rain / Surging Totemground AoE
Sustained ground-targeted AoE on the stack; Surging Totem (Totemic) repositions with you.
Wellspring / Downpourinstant burst
Instant burst-AoE top — Wellspring for a frontal/spread group, Downpour for a stacked one.
Unleash Lifepre-buff
Empowers your next heal (and a second cast with the 4pc). Open ramps and Chain Heals with it for free throughput.
Healing Stream / Stormstream Totempassive
Passive totem healing that makes up most of your HPS — refresh on cooldown and dump at max charges; Stormstream is your big totem-heal proc.

💧 Mana, Triage & Efficiency

The golden rule: keep your mana percentage roughly in line with boss/dungeon health percentage. If you're way ahead, you're overhealing — start weaving damage. If you're behind, tighten up and lean on totems.

  • Efficient vs panic - Healing Wave, Chain Heal and your totems are your efficient heals. Healing Surge is expensive — only for true emergencies.
  • Riptide first - never Chain Heal into an untagged group. A Riptide tag is ~20% extra healing on that Chain Heal; skipping it is a flat HPS and mana loss.
  • Free throughput - Nature's Swiftness and Ancestral Swiftness give instant, often mana-discounted casts. Spending them on cooldown (ideally on Chain Heal) is free healing that also procs Stormstream Totem.
  • Mana Tide timing - pop it during a lull, never while near-full. Stagger it against the next heavy phase.

Raid ramp: Resto ramps lightly. Before a known raid-wide hit, pre-cast Riptides across the group, drop Healing Rain / Surging Totem on the stack, and have Healing Stream/Stormstream rolling — then release Healing Tide (or Spirit Link for the DR) as the damage lands. Ascendance + Chain Heal is your sustained-output window.

💡 DPS is mana-neutral throughput: Flame Shock + Lava Burst on procs and free Lightning Bolts add real damage with no opportunity cost when the group is topped. This is how you keep mana ahead.
⚠️ Don't dump both big cooldowns on the same spike. Spirit Link, Healing Tide and Ascendance should each cover a different damage event across the fight.

💚 Personal Defensives

Resto is sturdy for a healer. Layer these on predictable hits on you so you can keep casting instead of self-healing.

Astral Shift% DR cooldown
Your main personal mitigation — a strong flat damage reduction for several seconds. Pop it pre-emptively for big hits aimed at you.
Stone Bulwark Totemabsorb
Drops a totem that shields you with a refreshing absorb. Layer it with Astral Shift for predictable incoming damage.
Spirit Link Totem3 min
Doubles as personal mitigation — while you stand in it you also get the 15% damage reduction and health averaging.
Earth Elementallong CD
Summons a beefy elemental that can soak or peel; a situational pressure-relief button.
Self-Riptide / Healing Surgeinstant / fast
You're a healer — keep a Riptide on yourself and self-Surge in a pinch rather than eating avoidable damage.
Reincarnationself-rez, long CD
Last-resort self battle-rez. Avoid casual use in high keys — the death penalty and cooldown are steep.

🧰 Utility & Crowd Control

AbilityUse
Wind ShearThe ONLY healer interrupt — 4s lockout, 30s CD. A defining reason Resto is top M+; use a mouseover/focus macro.
Purify SpiritMagic dispel (8s CD). Cleanses Curse + Magic; key for dispellable affixes and boss debuffs.
Poison Cleansing TotemAuto-cleanses Poison from allies near it — drop it for poison-heavy packs/affixes.
Tremor TotemRemoves Fear, Charm and Sleep from allies within range — pre-drop for fear mechanics.
Capacitor TotemAoE stun (~3s) after a short charge, ~1 min. Core M+ stun; pre-place it where the pack will be.
Earthbind / Earthgrab TotemAoE slow / root — kite tool and add control.
HexSingle-target CC for humanoids/beasts (~1 min). Soft CC a dangerous caster.
PurgeStrips an enemy beneficial buff — remove dangerous enrages/shields (e.g. Ascendant affix).
Spirit Link TotemDoubles as a raid external: 15% group DR + health averaging saves low players.
Astral Shift / Stone Bulwark TotemPersonal defensives — Astral Shift is a strong %DR; Stone Bulwark is a self-absorb.
Ghost Wolf / Spirit Walk / Wind Rush TotemMobility — Spirit Walk breaks roots; Wind Rush speeds the whole group through zones.

📊 Stat Priority

Item Level is king — take the higher ilvl piece in almost every case; the secondary spread rarely matters more than raw stats. On top of ilvl, Resto specifically values Leech and Avoidance tertiaries highly because its passive-totem healing makes Leech self-sustain very efficient.

Secondary priority (general): Critical Strike > Haste > Versatility > Mastery. Crit doubles your heals and procs; Haste smooths casts and totem ticks; Mastery (Deep Healing — bigger heals on lower-HP targets) is the dump stat, valued last because it's least reliable.

💡 The off-set helm Oblivion Guise is prioritized over the tier helm — its huge Crit budget and guaranteed Leech outweigh the helm tier slot, so build your 4-set from Shoulders / Chest / Legs / Gloves.

Don't gear around hard breakpoints; grab ilvl + Leech/Avoidance and let Crit lead your secondaries.

🎁 Tier Set, Trinkets & Consumables

Tier set (Midnight S1): 2pc — Unleash Life's cooldown is reduced by 3s and its direct healing is increased by 100%. 4pc — Unleash Life affects an additional spell cast at 100% effectiveness. This turns Unleash Life into a real heal and a near-extra Riptide charge: cast it to juice your next Chain Heal / Healing Wave. Run the 4-set from Shoulders, Chest, Legs, Gloves so you can wear the off-set helm Oblivion Guise.

Top trinkets (raid): Gaze of the Alnseer, Light of the Cosmic Crescendo, Locus-Walker's Ribbon (passives); Litany of Lightblind Wrath as an on-use. M+: Radiant Sunstone (its on-use procs off Healing Rain), Whisper of the Duskwraith, Heart of Wind.

Gems: Telluric Eversong Diamond (cogwheel) + Flawless Versatile Garnet / Flawless Deadly (Amethyst / Peridot / Lapis). Enchants: Empowered Hex of Leeching (helm), Silvermoon's Mending (shoulders), Arcanoweave Spellthread (legs), Mark of the Magister (chest), Nature's Fury (rings), Acuity of the Ren'dorei (weapon), Shaladrassil's Roots (boots).

🗝️ Mythic+ Tips

  • Wind Shear is your superpower — you're the only healer who can interrupt. Set a kick rotation with the group and lock the dangerous casts yourself.
  • Pre-drop totems before the pull: Healing Stream/Stormstream + Healing Rain/Surging Totem so passive healing is rolling the instant damage starts.
  • Spirit Link Totem on big tank/group spikes — the 15% DR plus health averaging is a near-defensive cooldown for the whole party.
  • Capacitor Totem: pre-place it where the pack will be standing so the stun lands on engage, not 3 seconds late.
  • Ascendant affix: Wind Shear / Capacitor to control the cast and Purge to strip the buff. Devour/Void affixes: Purify Spirit + Poison Cleansing Totem to clear the debuffs.
  • Pulsar/soak affixes: Wind Rush Totem + Spirit Walk / Ghost Wolf to reposition the group through zones quickly.
  • Ancestral Vigor is worth talenting at high keys to blunt one-shot burst by raising max HP on your heal targets.
  • Totemic is the recommended M+ tree — instant, repositionable totems are forgiving on movement-heavy dungeons.
  • Avoid casual Reincarnation use at +12 and above — the death penalty (and its CD) is steep; save the battle rez of last resort.

⌨️ Macros & Addons

WeakAuras is not supported in Midnight (12.0) — use Blizzard's built-in Cooldown Manager (importable configs on Wago.io). Addons: ElvUI, DBM/BigWigs, GTFO, Cell or Grid2 + click-casting for fast Riptide / Purify Spirit / Chain Heal.

🚫 Common Mistakes

  • Chain Healing into an untagged group — always Riptide first; skipping it is roughly a 20% HPS loss on that cast.
  • Sitting on Wind Shear — as the only healer interrupt, a missed kick on you is often a wipe. Own a kick assignment.
  • Stacking Spirit Link, Healing Tide and Ascendance on the same spike instead of spreading them across the fight's damage events.
  • Letting Nature's/Ancestral Swiftness and Unleash Life sit on cooldown — they're free, juiced throughput and feed Stormstream procs.
  • Forgetting totems — Healing Stream/Stormstream and Healing Rain/Surging are most of your HPS; dropping their uptime tanks your output.
  • Never doing damage — when the group is topped, Flame Shock + Lava Burst + Lightning Bolt is free DPS that keeps your mana ahead of the boss.
  • Popping Mana Tide while near-full — wasting the refill; use it in a lull before the next heavy phase.
