Mythic+ Dungeon ยท Frozen Halls, Icecrown (Wrath of the Lich King) ยท Midnight Season 1

Pit of Saron

Pit of Saron is a three-boss Frozen Halls dungeon brought into the Midnight Season 1 Mythic+ pool. It is a heavily frost-themed run with constant ramping party damage (Permafrost / Siphoning Chill style auras), several lethal interrupt checks on caster trash, and a final-boss add phase that doubles as the dungeon's hardest healing test. Success hinges on tight interrupt rotations, disciplined positioning around ground hazards, and saving group cooldowns for the scripted damage spikes rather than the timer alone.

๐Ÿงญ Overview

Pit of Saron is the WotLK-era Frozen Halls instance, now a Midnight Season 1 Mythic+ dungeon. The pull volume is moderate but the damage profile is relentless: nearly every pack layers a frost or shadow aura on top of its avoidable hazards, so the run rewards groups that pre-plan cooldowns and never let casters free-cast.

 • Three bosses - Forgemaster Garfrost (frost giant, ore-chunk cover mechanic), Ick & Krick (linked duo, fixation + interrupt check), and Scourgelord Tyrannus with the frost wyrm Rimefang (army add phase).
 • Theme - frost-heavy. Expect stacking frost-vulnerability debuffs, ground ice patches, and several magic debuffs that want a dispel.
 • Skill checks - interrupt assignments on Dreadpulse Lich and the Plaguespreader adds, plus positioning discipline so nobody overlaps cleave/puddle mechanics.
๐Ÿ“ The dungeon is mostly linear: a forge platform, an icy descent through the quarry camps, and a final gauntlet to Tyrannus. Pull pacing matters more than route creativity here.
โš ๏ธ Top wipe causes: a missed Dreadpulse Lich interrupt nuking the tank, the group eating the Tyrannus army phase with no defensives, and players standing in stacked frost ground effects until a magic debuff doubles the damage.

๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ Optimal Route & Pull Strategy

Linear progression: clear to Forgemaster Garfrost first, then work down through the quarry camps to Ick & Krick, then finish the gauntlet trash and pull Scourgelord Tyrannus. All required quarry camps must be liberated to open the path to the final boss, so this is a high-completion route โ€” focus on pull efficiency, not skips. Import an MDT route for exact pack counts; pacing and interrupt assignments matter more than creative pathing.

 1. Opening forge platform: pull the frost casters (Rimebone Coldwraith / Coldwraith-type mobs) into the giant patrolling Garfrost's area, but pull them BEFORE engaging Garfrost so you are not interrupting boss casts and trash casts at once. Assign interrupts on every Icebolt; dispel/cleanse Permeating Cold off targeted players.
 2. Forgemaster Garfrost (Boss 1): fight him near the ore chunks he creates from Throw Saronite so the tank can break them for cover. Save a group cooldown for Cryostomp.
 3. Descend toward the quarry. Single-pull or carefully chain the Dreadpulse Lich packs โ€” these are the most dangerous trash in the dungeon. Hard-assign interrupts on Icy Blast (tank-lethal) and try to kill the lich before it drops below 50% where Dread Pulse pulses AoE every 2 seconds.
 4. Liberate the quarry camps. These packs hold the Scourge prisoners; clearing them is mandatory to progress. Watch for Plungetalon Gargoyle (Plungegrip grab + Stoneskin), Iceborn Proto-Drake (Frost Breath frontal cone), and Glacieth (Focused Guard โ€” attack from behind or you do ~1% damage; avoid Cryoburst puddles).
 5. Ick & Krick (Boss 2): pull in an open area so you can kite the fixation. Cleave both since they share health via Necrolink.
 6. Final gauntlet trash up to Tyrannus: clear Arcanist Cadaver (interrupt Netherburst), Gloombound Shadebringer (interrupt Shadow Bolt), Quarry Tormentor (decurse Curse of Torment), and any Ymirjar Graveblade packs (avoid Dark Rupture puddles; tank manages heavy Frostbane Slash).
 7. Scourgelord Tyrannus + Rimefang (Boss 3): position to drop Rime Blast cleave onto Bone Piles in phase 1, then hard-focus the Scourge Plaguespreaders during Army of the Dead. Keep the boss out of Rimefang's frost patches.
 8. Pacing rule: never pull a Dreadpulse Lich pack together with another caster pack unless you have a full interrupt roster ready โ€” overlapping kick checks is the #1 cause of avoidable deaths here.

๐Ÿ‘‘ Boss Strategies

Three encounters. Each has a clear group-damage spike to cooldown through and a positioning or interrupt check. Abilities below are listed with exactly how to handle each.

Forgemaster Garfrost
Forgemaster GarfrostBoss 1
Frost giant who patrols between two forges and uses the arena's ore chunks as the core mechanic. Throw Saronite โ€” hurls saronite at 2 players, creating Ore Chunks where it lands; spread so your targeted circles don't overlap and don't cleave allies, and try to drop the chunks close together so the tank can manage them. Orebreaker โ€” tank-targeted; the tank must overlap an Ore Chunk to break it and avoid the stun/heavy hit, so keep at least one chunk available for cover. Glacial Overload โ€” Garfrost channels into the nearest forge; the whole group hides behind a remaining Ore Chunk to block it โ€” getting caught stacks frost vulnerability and 3+ stacks are lethal. Cryostomp โ€” group-wide frost damage that also applies a Magic debuff (Cryoshards) to 2 players; pop a group/personal cooldown for the hit and dispel the 2 debuffed players immediately. Siphoning Chill โ€” passive frost damage aura that ramps with the Magic debuff present, so prompt dispels also reduce overall healing strain. How to win: manage Ore Chunks as both cover and a renewable resource โ€” never destroy your last chunk before Glacial Overload, dispel Cryostomp targets on sight, and the tank faces the giant away from the group.
Ick & KrickBoss 2
A linked pair โ€” the ghoul Ick carries the gnome Krick. Necrolink โ€” the two share a health pool, so always cleave both; there is no kill order. Death Bolt โ€” Krick casts this at a random player; a hard interrupt check, kick every cast. Shade Shift โ€” spawns Shades that cast Shadowbind (a curse/bind); focus the Shades down and interrupt their casts, and decurse anyone bound. Blight Smash / Plague Globs โ€” Ick slams or throws plague that leaves Blight ichor puddles on the ground; the tank takes the smash and drops the puddle away from the group, everyone else dodges the projectiles and never stands in the ichor. Plague Explosion (Plague Expulsion) โ€” places puddles under several random players and spikes group damage; pre-spread, pre-position so puddles land harmlessly, and use a personal during the spike. Get 'em, Ick! (Lumbering Fixation) โ€” Krick orders Ick to fixate a random player for several seconds; the fixated player runs away and kites until it ends (do not try to tank-swap it), everyone else keeps cleaving. How to win: keep both bodies stacked for cleave, hard-assign Death Bolt/Shadowbind interrupts, kite fixations cleanly, and keep the floor clear of Blight so the kiter always has room.
Scourgelord Tyrannus (with Rimefang)Boss 3
The final boss fights alongside the frost wyrm Rimefang, who strafes the room with frost. Rime Blast โ€” targets players and cleaves nearby; in phase 1 deliberately position so the blast lands on/near the Bone Piles (marked by green light pillars) to pre-soften them for the add phase, and don't cluster so a single blast hits everyone. Bone Infusion / Army of the Dead โ€” Tyrannus stomps necrotic energy and animates the Bone Piles into adds; the whole group pops cooldowns and immediately swaps to the Scourge Plaguespreaders โ€” these deal heavy raid-wide damage via a Festering Pulse aura and cast Plague Bolt, so hard-focus them and interrupt every Plague Bolt at all costs. The lesser Rotlings/Rotting Ghouls stack a disease (Rotting Strikes) on the tank โ€” dispel it or have the tank kite if undispellable. Scourgelord's Brand โ€” tank knockback followed by a leap/heavy hit; the tank uses a major defensive and repositions. Death's Grasp / Ice Barrage โ€” spawn ground circles and channeled patches to dodge; just move out. How to win: bank major cooldowns and interrupts for the Army of the Dead phase, kill Plaguespreaders before their aura overwhelms the healer, keep the boss out of Rimefang's frost patches, and pre-cleave the Bone Piles during phase 1 so the add phase is shorter.

๐Ÿ’€ Dangerous Trash & Interrupt Priority

Pit of Saron is an interrupt-heavy dungeon. Hard-assign kicks before pulling caster packs โ€” most deaths come from a single missed cast, not raw tank damage. Casters listed are roughly in priority order.

 • Dreadpulse Lich - the most dangerous trash in the dungeon, immune to CC. Interrupt Icy Blast at all costs โ€” it is tank-targeted and extremely high damage. Focus down (or run out of) Torrent of Misery on the targeted player. Below 50% HP it begins Dread Pulse, raid-wide AoE every 2 seconds, so burn it fast once it's low. Never pull two of these without a full interrupt roster.
 • Arcanist Cadaver - interrupt Netherburst every cast; it is a large AoE hit that will chunk the group if it lands.
 • Rimebone Coldwraith - interrupt the random-target Icebolt. Permeating Cold debuffs 2 random players โ€” magic-dispel or use a Freedom-style effect to remove it.
 • Gloombound Shadebringer - interrupt Shadow Bolt; lethal if left to free-cast on a clothie.
 • Quarry Tormentor - Curse of Torment on a random target โ€” decurse it, or heal through the absorb to clear it.
 • Glacieth - immune to CC. Avoid Cryoburst puddles and don't stack (Cryopatch ground ice). During its Focused Guard channel it gains ~99% damage reduction from the front โ€” attack from behind for guaranteed/normal damage.
 • Iceborn Proto-Drake - immune to CC. Dodge the Frost Breath frontal cone; the tank eats bonus frost from Icy Strikes and should mitigate.
 • Plungetalon Gargoyle - Plungegrip grabs a player; it also uses Stoneskin โ€” break the absorb or use an immunity/vanish effect to drop the grab.
 • Ymirjar Graveblade - avoid Dark Rupture ground puddles; the tank manages heavy Frostbane Slash hits with active mitigation.
 • Rotting Ghoul - stacks Rotting Strikes disease on the tank; dispel the stacks or kite if no disease dispel is available.
โš ๏ธ Quarry camps are mandatory โ€” every camp must be cleared to open the path to Tyrannus, so plan interrupt assignments for the whole descent, not just the named bosses.

๐ŸŒ€ Seasonal Affixes in Pit of Saron

Midnight Season 1 stacks affixes by key level: Lindormi's Guidance (low keys, route help) at the bottom, a rotating Xal'atath's Bargain from +5 to +11, Fortified/Tyrannical entering around +7 (both together at +10+), and Xal'atath's Guile replacing the Bargain at +12+. Here's how they bite in this dungeon:

 • Fortified weeks - the worst for Pit of Saron because the dungeon is trash-heavy and interrupt-dense. Beefier Dreadpulse Liches and quarry packs mean a missed Icy Blast or Netherburst is even more likely to one-shot. Bring extra interrupts and a magic dispel.
 • Tyrannical weeks - the Tyrannus army phase and Garfrost's Cryostomp become brutal group-damage checks. Hold healer/group cooldowns specifically for Army of the Dead and the Cryostomp dispels.
 • Bargain: Ascendant - orbs cast Cosmic Ascension that empower enemies; you can't reasonably kill the orbs, so bring interrupts/dispels/displacements to stop the casts. Save AoE stops (knockbacks, stuns) for orb waves rather than trash โ€” Pit's pull density makes overlapping orbs + Dreadpulse casts dangerous.
 • Bargain: Voidbound - a Void Emissary empowers nearby enemies with Dark Prayer; swap and burn the Emissary fast while kicking every Dark Prayer, then enjoy the +30% cooldown rate / +20% Versatility reward to push the next pull.
 • Bargain: Pulsar - the forgiving week; players just run to each other to clear their Pulsars. Easy to manage even in this dungeon's tight corridors โ€” just keep spacing loose enough to converge.
 • Bargain: Devour - personal dispels are key; standard healer dispels only clear 2 of the 5 Devours, so assign self-dispels. Stacks badly with Pit's existing magic debuffs (Permeating Cold, Cryoshards) โ€” coordinate so you aren't dispel-starved.
 • Xal'atath's Guile (+12+) - every death subtracts 15s from the timer, no recovery. In a dungeon this interrupt-dependent, one botched Icy Blast or army phase can erase your timer cushion โ€” play conservatively, double-cover key kicks.

๐Ÿ’ก Role Tips & Common Wipe Causes

 • TANK โ€” Garfrost: keep one Ore Chunk alive for Glacial Overload cover and only break chunks via Orebreaker when forced; face the giant away from the group. Save a defensive for Scourgelord's Brand and mitigate Iceborn Proto-Drake's Icy Strikes / Ymirjar Frostbane Slash.
 • TANK โ€” pull pacing is your job: never chain a second Dreadpulse Lich into the first, and don't grab a caster pack the group can't fully interrupt. Watch Rotting Strikes disease stacks during the Tyrannus army.
 • HEALER โ€” pre-ramp for the three scripted spikes: Garfrost's Cryostomp, Ick & Krick's Plague Explosion, and Tyrannus's Army of the Dead (the hardest healing window). Hold a cooldown for each rather than reacting late.
 • HEALER โ€” dispel duty is heavy: Cryoshards after Cryostomp, Permeating Cold off Coldwraiths, Curse of Torment from Quarry Tormentors, and tank disease during the army. On Devour weeks remind DPS to self-dispel.
 • DPS โ€” interrupts win this dungeon. Assign Icy Blast (Dreadpulse Lich), Netherburst (Arcanist Cadaver), Shadow Bolt (Gloombound Shadebringer), Death Bolt/Shadowbind (Ick & Krick), and Plague Bolt (Plaguespreaders). Cover the priority casts even if it costs you uptime.
 • DPS โ€” on Tyrannus, position to land Rime Blast cleave on the Bone Piles in phase 1, then instantly swap to Plaguespreaders during Army of the Dead. On Ick & Krick, always cleave both bodies (shared health) and kite cleanly if you get the fixation.
 • DPS โ€” respect the frontal/positional checks: dodge Iceborn Proto-Drake's Frost Breath, never face-tank Glacieth's Focused Guard (hit it from behind), and don't stack in Glacieth Cryopatch or Garfrost saronite circles.
 • COMMON WIPES โ€” (1) a missed Dreadpulse Lich Icy Blast deleting the tank; (2) the group entering Army of the Dead with no defensives and getting pulsed down; (3) overlapping caster pulls so interrupts run out; (4) standing in stacked frost ground effects while a magic debuff (Cryoshards/Permeating Cold) doubles the damage.
